Form and Function

During my time as a letterer, I’ve noticed
one underlying theme
that I always adhere to -
form and function.

Terence Tang

Often times in lettering, we see examples of form versus function - letter forms that are beautifully artistic but hard to read, or others that are very easy to read but boring to look at. Looking outside of lettering, I’m constantly coming across countless products that are easy to use but clunky or ugly, and other products that are beautiful to look at but frustrating to use.

I’m passionate about pushing the boundaries of both form and function in everything that I create.

Taking the Leap

In July of 2015, I left my comfortable full-time job to start my own business. I grew up under the mindset that a successful career path was working for a big company for 40+ years before retiring. After 12 years of struggling to find lasting passion in the corporate world, I realized the pipe dream in the back of my mind needed to become a reality.

The decision to leave my job wasn’t easy. I earned a decent salary with amazing benefits at a stable organization with great people doing something I love to do. At the time of leaving my job, my wife and I hadn’t even been in our brand new house for a year. Our newborn son was 7 weeks old. But we knew we had to take one step back to make it possible to take two steps forward.

I know this is something many aspiring entrepreneurs struggle with every day. They walk through the doors of their employer and wonder - what if? - but they continue suppressing their dreams under the comfort of a stable income and a fear of failure. A behind-the-scenes look at a real-life instance of someone who took the leap would have helped me through this process. That’s why I'm sharing my journey through entrepreneurship in a weekly vlog. I discuss my thought processes, successes, failures, and struggles.
